I was deceived (and now mystified) by the 5-star rating. This is an amateur effort, with a silly plot that you've read 100 times before. For those seeking a procedural drama, this one adds nothing to the genre. The characters are wooden, the writing is dull, and the plot is telegraphed from the beginning. Even the cover is misleading, showing a white politician, when the plot is supposedly about African-Americans, although the "street" dialog is embarrassingly off the mark. The thinly veiled "Christian-values" subtext is distracting, unpersuasive in the mouth of his unlikeable protagonist, and contributes nothing to the story, other than an explanation for why Mr. Swiger is bothering to pen this drek. Rarely do I toss a book, but this one is going straight to the shredder.
Lethal Ambition is a legal thriller wrapped inside a classical "whodunit" murder mystery - a sort of Agatha Christie meets John Grisham - all the while dealing with social issues plaguing big cities all across America done in a non-threatening, rational and objective way. I simply could not put the book down, and read it from cover-to-cover in about eight hours. The plot is set in and around the greater Cleveland area, showcasing many of the city's historical and contemporary points of interest. Having spent half my life in Cleveland, I really appreciated how Swiger also included settings that were off the beaten path, sights that would not normally be found in a Rand McNally Atlas.
The main character Edward Mead came across being incredibly intelligent, funny, yet flawed. And the interplay between Mead and his wife dying of cancer were simply heart-rending. The rest of the cast of villains and politicians along with cameo appearances from local Cleveland celebrities made the story jump from the page. These characters were real people, and even though there exists a local flavor, the deep messages can be appreciated anywhere.
This is my honest opinion of this marvelous book.
Rarely do I read a book so quickly and effortlessly.
Never have I seen a book written without fluff. This could not have been an easy task ....to edit and tell the story without so much detail that the reader loses the story and gets sidetracked.
All the characters were fully developed and you got to like them and hate them because the details told you their story.
I have 2 more of your books and am putting them at the top of my TBR pile.

Lethal Ambition (An Edward Mead Legal Thriller) will hold your interest from the first page. Edward Mead is involved in a murder mystery that is that is quite unique. I loved the book!

This book grabs you from the get-go and doesn't let you leave for even a minute! The characters are great, you love them, you hate them and you feel sorry for some of them...ok two of them. Just like a fine meal the ones you hate get their "just-deserts!" This is a must read!
Excellent legal read. Kept me totally intrigued. Great character development and book moved at a great pace. I highly recommend it if you like legal thrillers.
